Maryani Rasidjan
Maryani Palupy Rasidjan is a PhD student in the UCSF/UCB Joint Medical Anthropology Program. Her doctoral research focuses on women’s reproductive health in Papua, Indonesia, with particular focus on Indonesia’s family planning program. She is primarily interested in investigating the ways in which notions of difference and identity emerge as problems of race within women’s reproductive health in Papua. Her research questions how race is constructed, contested, and mobilized in and through the family planning program, thus exploring the npotential impact of racial categories on reproductive health outcomes. Previous to her life a graduate student, Maryani was a community health organizer in her hometown in the Bronx, advocating for healthier school environments. She continues to work with youth of color as a high school tutor.
