Urban Gun Violence: Realities and Solutions
Part of the Human Rights Center's Series on Gun Violence
Matrix is located on the 8th floor of Barrows Hall, on the UC Berkeley campus, near Telegraph and Bancroft Avenues, just up the hill from Sather Gate. There are entrances at both ends of the building, but only one of the elevators on the eastern side goes directly to the 8th floor. You can alternatively take the stairs to the 7th floor and walk up the stairs.
While mass shootings get massive media coverage, urban communities of color bear the brunt of gun violence. African Americans are seven times as likely as whites to die from gun-related homicide, according to the Centers for Disease Control. In response, cities like Oakland and Richmond are implementing innovative and controversial solutions.
This event will penetrate stereotypes and delve into the realities of urban gun violence and successful measures to combat that violence in Richmond, Oakland—and nationwide. We’ll hear from a frontline community organizer, policy expert, and city official about what’s wrong—and what’s working. Panelists include: Reverend Ben McBride, Director of Clergy Development, PICO California; Reygan Harmon, Ceasefire Project Manager, City of Oakland, and former Oakland Senior Policy Advisor on Public Safety; Mike McLively, Staff Attorney at the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence and Leader, Healing Communities in Crisis initiative. The panel will be moderated by Savala Trepczynski, Executive Director, Thelton E. Henderson Center for Social Justice, Berkeley Law.
Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP at www.TinyURL.com/
