In the face of dwindling funding and mistrust in data, how can we secure social knowledge for future generations? Social Science Matrix was honored to welcome Alondra Nelson, president of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), for a lecture entitled "The New Research Compact: Social Science Partnerships for the Common Good."

Recorded on October 25 at UC Berkeley's Social Science Matrix, this panel discussion focused on the limits of what can be learned about sexual violence and harassment from personal narratives that are shared online, as well as the question of what is missed in survey data related to sexual violence and harassment.

Social Science Matrix is honored to welcome our 2018-2019 cohort of Matrix Dissertation Fellows, four Ph.D. candidates whose research interests span diverse global challenges such as urbanization, discrimination in the workforce, self-immolation, and indigenous language preservation.

The 2018-2019 Social Science Matrix Research Teams will address a range of important social-science questions, including sexual harassment and sexual violence, the social impacts of cannabis production, gender and technology, genetic ancestry testing, child marriage, and more.

Matrix was honored to host a panel discussion featuring E. Glen Weyl, principal researcher at Microsoft and visiting senior research scholar in economics and law at Yale University. The panel focused on Weyl's book, Radical Markets (co-authored with Eric Posner), which introduces provocative ideas on how to use markets to tame monopoly, lessen inequality, and enhance inclusiveness.

Drawing from his recently published book Not Enough: Human Rights in an Unequal World, Professor Moyn took on the debate about how to conceptualize the relationship between human rights and neoliberal globalization.

In this presentation, recorded on February 27, 2018, panelists discuss the various types of threats facing scholars around the world, as well as as solutions that have been developed by governments, academic institutions, and non-governmental organizations, including Scholars at Risk, which works to protect threatened scholars and promote academic freedom around the world.

On January 31, 2018, Craig Calhoun, President of the Berggruen Institute and Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics, presented the UC Berkeley Social Science Matrix Distinguished Lecture, "Cosmopolitanism and Belonging."
