The Sputnik Syndrome
How Russian Universities Make Sense of Global Competition in Higher Education
Matrix is located on the 8th floor of Barrows Hall, on the UC Berkeley campus, near Telegraph and Bancroft Avenues, just up the hill from Sather Gate. There are entrances at both ends of the building, but only one of the elevators on the eastern side goes directly to the 8th floor. You can alternatively take the stairs to the 7th floor and walk up the stairs from there.
The launch of Sputnik in 1957 provoked deep reforms within the U.S. higher education system. The emergence and development of global university rankings 50 years later has had a similar effect on Russian higher education. Under the new governmental 5-100 Project, 15 Russian universities received additional support to hit global rankings in return for extensive internationalization and a significant increase of research outputs.
This program will be the topic of “The Sputnik Syndrome: How Russian Universities Make Sense of Global Competition in Higher Education," a presentation by Igor Chirikov, a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Education (Higher School of Economics, Moscow) and a Managing Director of Student Experience in the Research University International Consortium (SERU-I) at the Center for Studies in Higher Education (CSHE), at UC Berkeley.
Igor Chirikov holds a Ph.D in Sociology; his interests include international comparative higher education, organizational change, institutional research, and student experience. His talk will explore how governmental officials, university administrators, and faculty members make sense of global competition and how universities change in response to the requirements of global competition.
This event is part of the CSHE's Global Higher Education Seminar Series; it is sponsored by the CSHE and the Institute for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies, UC Berkeley.
