What’s Next for Turkey?
A Discussion with Nicole Pope, Columnist for Today's Zaman
Matrix is located on the 8th floor of Barrows Hall, on the UC Berkeley campus, near Telegraph and Bancroft Avenues, just up the hill from Sather Gate. There are entrances at both ends of the building, but only one of the elevators on the eastern side goes directly to the 8th floor. You can alternatively take the stairs to the 7th floor and walk up the stairs.
Turkey has experienced a dramatic reversal of fortune in the last few years. Once a model Islamic democracy with a booming economy, Turkey now faces challenges on many fronts: the renewal of PKK-linked violence, the arrival of millions of Syrian refugees, deep engagement in the Syrian civil war, a bitter disupute with Russia over the downing of a Russian fighter jet, and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s assault on the independent media.
In her presentation at Social Science Matrix, Nicole Pope will discuss these recent developments in Turkey and speculate about its prospects for the immediate future. Pope is a Swiss journalist and writer who has been based in Istanbul since 1987. She was Turkey correspondent for the French daily Le Monde for 15 years and has reported on Turkey for a variety of print and broadcast media, including The Economist, MSNBC, BBC, and Radio Canada. As a columnist, she has written extensively about gender, human rights and social issues. She is the author of Honor Killings in the Twenty-First Century (Palgrave Macmillan) and the co-author of Turkey Unveiled: a History of Modern Turkey (Overlook Press).
This event is co-sponsored by Social Science Matrix, the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, the German Department, and the Katharine Bixby Chair in English.
