Battle Lines: Who is Framing the Debate on Gun Violence?
Panel Discussion with George Lakoff, Makani Themba, and Lawrence Wallack
Join us on October 25 at 5pm for a panel discussion about the framing of the gun rights debate with George Lakoff, internationally acclaimed linguist, cognitive scientist, and author of Don't Think of an Elephant; Makani Themba, Chief Strategist at Higher Ground Change Strategies, in Detroit, Michigan—and a social justice innovator and change communications pioneer; and Dr. Lawrence Wallack, Professor at Oregon Health & Science University-Portland State University School of Public Health and emeritus professor of public health at UC Berkeley.
How do advocates for gun rights, and for gun violence prevention, frame their cases in the media—or fail to do so? How has this framing contributed to the partisan divide among voters and legislators that has prevented meaningful federal gun legislation from passing in the last 20 years? This expert panel will pull back the curtain on the messaging, linguistics, and spin used to frame the discussion of gun violence.
This is the second event in a year-long event series on gun violence. Together with Social Science Matrix, this event is co-sponsored by the Human Rights Center, Graduate School of Journalism, School of Public Health, Henderson Center for Social Justice, and the Human Rights Program, a Matrix-affiliated research center.
