Reflections on the 2016 Election and the Republican Party Under President Trump

Matrix is located on the 8th floor of Barrows Hall, on the UC Berkeley campus, near Telegraph and Bancroft Avenues, just up the hill from Sather Gate. There are entrances at both ends of the building, but only one of the elevators on the eastern side goes directly to the 8th floor. You can alternatively take the stairs to the 7th floor and walk up the stairs.
This panel, sponsored by the Institute for the Study of Societal Issues and Center for Right-Wing Studies, will reflect on the 2016 U.S. presidential election and its implications for the Right in the United States.
Dr. Lawrence Rosenthal will address the emergence and significance of the Donald Trump phenomenon, focusing on Trump's exploitation of rifts among factions of the Republican Party that assumed unprecedented levels in 2016.
Carole Joffe, Professor, Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health at UCSF and Professor Emerita in the UC Davis Department of Sociology, will discuss the role that traditional electoral priorities of the Right, particularly abortion and marriage equality, played in the outcome of the election.
Paul Pierson, Professor of Political Science at UC Berkeley, will discuss what the outcome of the election means for the future of the Republican Party and the American Right.”
The panel will be moderated by Professor Kim Voss, from the UC Berkeley Department of Sociology.
