Paloma Medina (author and PhD candidate in Biomolecular Engineering at UC Santa Cruz) will read from their new book Looking for Marla, the story of a curious clownfish in transition as they find their way from fatherhood to motherhood. Following the reading, stick around for snacks, book buying, community building, and zine-making. We’ll have supplies for you to creatively explore your own ideas about gender, sex, & biology in DIY print media form. Bring your friends, sweeties, and curiosities.
Paloma Medina is a Ph.D. candidate in the Biomolecular Engineering program at UC Santa Cruz. When they are not in the lab or striking, they are thinking about the interweaving threads of gender, sex, culture, and biology. Since coming out to their family, they have explored how sex has changed through millions of years of evolutionary time. They are an award recipient of the U.S. Fulbright student research scholarship and the National Institute of Health T32 Training Program. They have a haircut that they find somewhat unprofessional, but also love it because of that. Their creative work has been supported by numerous organizations in Santa Cruz including the Science and Justice Research Center, the Santa Cruz Arts Council, and the UCSC Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurial Development. They love to read Looking for Marla and look forward to co-creating radical and playful futures with you.
